Non-market food provision - Transitory strategy - Food waste - Degrowth practice - Municipal strategy of climate change mitigation

Abstract: The paper summarizes a research project on several local transitory strategies of redistributing food that has dropped out of the market. The aim is to quantify the waste that is littered systematically by supermarkets in the city of Heidelberg (Germany). Furthermore, existing projects of non-market coordinated distribution of food such as food sharing via social networks or dumpster diving are documented. The potential of these social practices to use food resources more efficiently on a local level is estimated in order to contribute to discussion on the municipality’s master plan “100% Climate change mitigation” and to the realization of a socio-ecological economy in general.
